Kiambu County senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa has announced the passing of his mother, Lucia Wangui Thang’wa, in a heartfelt message that reflected both grief and gratitude for the life she lived.
The Senator shared the news on Friday March 5, revealing the deep personal loss his family is experiencing.
In his statement, the Senator paid tribute to his mother’s strength and the role she played in shaping their family despite the health challenges she faced in recent years.
“This afternoon we have lost our dear mother, Lucia Wangui Thang’wa, also known to many as Nyina wa Martin,” he said.
He disclosed that his mother had battled dementia for many years, a condition that gradually affected her memory and awareness.
Despite the illness, he said her presence remained a constant source of encouragement and emotional strength.
“For many years my mother battled dementia. I am not even sure she ever got to know that I was elected the Senator for Kiambu. But every time I saw her, sat with her, or spoke to her, I found strength to keep going,” he added.
The outspoken senator remembered his mother as a resilient matriarch who played a central role in raising their large family alongside their late father. He credited both parents with instilling values of discipline, love, and sacrifice in their thirteen children.
“She may not have remembered many things in her final years, but to us she remained the strong matriarch who, together with our late father, raised thirteen children with love, sacrifice, and discipline,” Karungo said.
Condolence messages have continued to pour in from leaders, friends, and residents of Kiambu County, many praising her legacy and offering support to the Senator and his family during this difficult time.
