A senior official in the County Government of Siaya County has been suspended after allegedly making disparaging remarks about Governor James Orengo during a recent political gathering.
In a suspension letter dated February 25, County Information Management Officer Richard Omondi Odhiambo, widely known as Makamu, was sent home over comments he made at a rally held on February 21. The event, organised by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), took place in neighbouring Kisumu County.
During his address, the county official reportedly faulted the governor’s leadership approach and accused him of weakening the party’s influence in Ugenya. He claimed he had previously cautioned the governor that certain decisions were eroding local support but that his concerns had been ignored. He also questioned the governor’s engagement with senior party figures and cast doubt on his commitment to ODM.
Clips of the speech circulated widely online, triggering sharp debate. While some residents defended the officer’s right to express his views, others criticised the tone and content of his remarks.
In its suspension notice, the county administration described the statements as offensive and disrespectful toward the governor. It termed the conduct gross misconduct and insubordination, citing violations of public service regulations and ethical standards governing state officers.
The suspension took effect immediately and will remain in place pending investigations. The officer has been instructed to surrender county property under his care and provide a written response within seven days explaining why further disciplinary measures should not be pursued.
