ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna attended the same Murang’a function as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a development that has fueled fresh political debate amid rising tensions within opposition ranks.

Sifuna was among leaders who attended the burial of Alice Wangari Gakuya, the mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, held in Makomboki village, Murang’a County. Gachagua was also present at the event, drawing attention due to his strained relations with sections of the political class.

The burial later became politically charged following chaos that erupted at a separate gathering in Murang’a involving Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu, who was heckled after declaring support for President William Ruto’s reelection bid.

Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has since accused Gachagua of masterminding violence against leaders perceived to oppose him, claims Gachagua has not publicly responded to. Kuria’s remarks have intensified scrutiny on politicians who attended the Murang’a events.

Sifuna’s presence alongside Gachagua has also sparked internal discussion within the Orange Democratic Movement, given the ODM Secretary General’s outspoken criticism of both the Kenya Kwanza administration and perceived political realignments.

Political analysts say the convergence of rival political figures at public functions in Mt. Kenya highlights the region’s growing political volatility ahead of the 2027 General Election, with alliances and rivalries increasingly playing out in public view.

Some sections in ODM have claimed that Sifuna, Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi and Godfrey Osotsi wants to ditch ODM Party for the United Opposition.
