Traffic flow along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway was brought to a standstill on Wednesday, December 31, following a violent protest by boda boda riders at Gitaru area.

The chaos erupted after a 14-seater matatu, reportedly operating under the NNK Sacco, was involved in a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a young motorcycle rider. According to witnesses, the victim, aged 22, was ferrying a carpet at the time of the incident when the matatu struck him while attempting to make a turn.

The collision sparked outrage among fellow boda boda operators who accused the matatu driver of reckless driving. Within minutes, a crowd gathered at the scene, and tensions quickly escalated. The riders reportedly blocked the highway before setting the matatu ablaze, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

The burning vehicle caused heavy traffic snarl-ups stretching several kilometres in both directions, significantly affecting commuters and commercial transport. Police officers later arrived at the scene to restore order and disperse the crowd, while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

The body of the deceased rider was taken to a mortuary as investigations into the accident began. Authorities have urged all road users to exercise caution and respect traffic rules, warning that acts of mob justice only worsen already tragic situations.
