Environmentalist Truphena Muthoni continues to attract national attention and accolades following her remarkable 72-hour tree-hugging record, which highlighted her commitment to environmental conservation and mental well-being advocacy.
Her latest achievement comes in the form of a full academic scholarship from Mount Kenya University (MKU), set to commence in January 2026.
The scholarship, presented by Professor Peter Wanderi on behalf of MKU Vice Chancellor Professor Deogratius Jaganyi, will enable Muthoni to pursue studies in environmental science or related fields, equipping her with formal training to complement her hands-on activism. “This scholarship empowers Truphena to inspire youth and expand her impact in environmental conservation,” Prof. Wanderi said, praising her dedication and innovative approach.
MKU’s gesture aligns with its broader mission to support young changemakers. Through the MKU Foundation, the university awards students who demonstrate exceptional commitment to societal and environmental causes. The move is also part of MKU’s Sh100 million alumni grant initiative, designed to recognize and further support alumni who make significant contributions to their communities.
Truphena’s recognition is not only a personal milestone but also a symbol of the growing value placed on endurance-based activism in Kenya. Her journey from grassroots advocate to formally supported environmental champion underscores the potential of unconventional approaches to drive change, while inspiring a new generation to take active roles in protecting the environment. #TruphenaMuthoni
