Police on Monday dispersed a section of opposition leaders and their supporters in Nairobi’s central business district after anti-riot officers lobbed tear gas canisters into a gathering that had briefly paralysed activity in the area.

The leaders including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa were leading what they described as a peaceful engagement with wananchi when police moved in to break up the crowd.

Witnesses said traders hurriedly shut their businesses as clouds of tear gas engulfed parts of the CBD, sending pedestrians scampering for safety. Traffic flow along major streets was temporarily disrupted as anti-riot police attempted to push back supporters who had gathered to catch a glimpse of the opposition figures.

The United #Opposition brigade had earlier vowed to continue pressing for reforms and accused the government of intolerance to dissent. Speaking briefly before the confrontation escalated, the leaders insisted that their presence in the city centre was lawful and aimed at addressing pressing national concerns, including the cost of living and governance issues.

Police did not immediately issue a detailed statement on the incident, but officers on the ground maintained that they were enforcing public order regulations.

No serious injuries were immediately reported, although several people were seen seeking medical attention due to the effects of tear gas. The incident adds to growing political tensions in the capital, as rival camps intensify public engagements and mobilization efforts.
