Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni wa Muchomba has launched a sharp attack on President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid, declaring that the Mt. Kenya region will not support him for a second term.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, the outspoken MP said residents of the region have already made up their minds and are determined not to “repeat the mistakes” they made in the 2022 General Election. According to Wamuchomba, backing President Ruto was the worst political decision Mt. Kenya voters took, one they are unwilling to make again.
“We are decided. Whether he works with Governor Anne Waiguru, William Kabogo, Kimani Ichung’wah and others, this will still not help improve the already damaged past to secure him a second term,” she said.
Wamuchomba argued that the region feels betrayed by the current administration, citing unmet expectations and growing dissatisfaction among voters. She maintained that political realignment in Mt. Kenya is inevitable as the 2027 elections draw closer.
Her remarks, however, sparked immediate backlash from leaders and commentators aligned with the government. Prominent constitutional lawyer and scholar Prof. Makau Mutua strongly criticized the MP’s comments, accusing her of promoting divisive politics.
“Very unfortunate remarks from a leader with national visibility. It’s this tribal, bigoted, and entitled siege mentality that has retarded Kenya’s development. Are the Kikuyu a herd of sheep without individual brains who can think for themselves? Cry, my beloved country,” Mutua said in a public reaction.
The exchange highlights growing political tensions within the Mt. Kenya region, which played a decisive role in President Ruto’s 2022 victory. As early campaigns for 2027 begin to take shape, statements like Wamuchomba’s signal deepening cracks that could significantly reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
