Gonzalez Become Messi Boss at Inter Miami

Gonzalez has officially taken charge at Inter Miami, arriving in Florida and beginning work with the MLS side as he prepares for his first games in his new role.

The Argentine has been appointed as the club’s permanent head coach following Javier Mascherano’s unexpected departure in April. Mascherano stepped down for personal reasons after leading the team during a successful spell.

The new appointment has another interesting connection to Mascherano’s time at the club. Before becoming a coach, Mascherano shared the pitch with Lionel Messi on numerous occasions, representing Argentina, the Olympic team and Barcelona.

The pair were also part of the Inter Miami setup that enjoyed success under Mascherano, including winning the MLS Eastern Conference and the MLS Cup. Gonzalez will now take over the team with Messi still among its biggest stars.

Gonzalez’s appointment marks his fourth managerial position. Before moving to Inter Miami, he gained coaching experience with Rosario Central, Union de Santa Fe and Club Atletico Platense.

His playing career was also built at several notable clubs. Gonzalez featured as a winger for Boca Juniors, Valencia and Inter Milan, among others, while earning 56 international appearances for Argentina and scoring 10 goals.

He crossed paths with Messi twice at international level, with both appearances coming during Argentina’s qualifying campaign for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

More than two decades later, Gonzalez and Messi are set to work together again. However, their relationship has now changed significantly, with Gonzalez taking on the responsibility of coaching the Argentine football superstar at Inter Miami.
