Parents and guardians can check learners’ Grade 10 placements by sending the learner’s KNEC assessment number via SMS to 22263, or through the Ministry of Education’s portal at placements.education.go.ke. The Ministry has officially released placements for candidates who sat the 2025 Kenya Junior Secondary Education Assessment (KJSEA).

Learners are expected to report to their assigned senior secondary schools by Monday, January 12, 2026. The placement process was fully automated, taking into account learners’ KJSEA performance, psychometric test results, equity considerations, school capacity, and individual preferences. “The top performers in each STEM, social science, and arts track will get priority placement in boarding schools of their choice,” the Ministry stated.

The 2025 KJSEA exams, held from October 27 to November 3, assessed the readiness of the pioneer cohort under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system. A total of 1,130,459 learners sat the exams, including 578,630 boys and 551,829 girls.

Parents wishing to request a school change must do so through heads of junior schools at least two weeks before the reporting date. Senior schools are required to declare vacancies through county directors of education. The Ministry stressed that the replacement process is one-time and irreversible, and joining instructions for approved replacements will be issued online only; schools are not allowed to issue printed letters.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba urged officers involved to ensure a “fair and credible selection and placement process” to guarantee a smooth transition from junior to senior secondary school.

The Ministry emphasized transparency and equity in the placement process, ensuring that merit and learner preferences guide the allocation of students in Kenya’s evolving education system.
