President William Ruto has continued his sharp criticism of opposition leaders as he tours Western Kenya, escalating his remarks on the third day of his visit.

Speaking during a stopover in Busia Town on Wednesday, March 18, the Head of State took aim at former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, urging them to adopt healthier lifestyles by cutting down on food intake and exercising more.

Ruto challenged leaders in the United Opposition to consider going to the gym, arguing that physical fitness plays a role in effective leadership.

“Walianza kusema ati mimi nimekonda lakini mimi nawaambia wapunguze chakula na waende gym. Mimi naenda gym ndio niweze kuamka asubuhi,” he said.

The President went further to accuse the two leaders of laziness linked to overindulgence, maintaining that his own routine – regular exercise and healthy eating – enables him to remain active and wake up early to attend to national duties across the country.

He added that the opposition’s current leadership risks falling short in future political contests if it fails to prioritise discipline and personal health.

Ruto’s remarks come in response to comments made a day earlier by Dr. Matiang’i, who had dismissed the President’s focus on his eating habits, stating that Ruto has no involvement in his personal life or household.
