National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula was on Thursday elevated to the rank of Senior Counsel during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi. The event marked a significant milestone in his long legal and political career, placing him among the country’s most distinguished legal minds.
Wetang’ula was among 54 advocates of the High Court of Kenya who received the prestigious designation from President William Ruto. The group of honorees, comprising seasoned lawyers and notable figures within the profession, gathered for the official conferment presided over by the Head of State.
In a statement released shortly after the event, Speaker Wetang’ula expressed deep gratitude and reflected on the weight of the recognition. “At State House, Nairobi, among esteemed colleagues and rising pillars of our legal fraternity, I felt a deep sense of pride and solemn duty as His Excellency the President conferred the rank of Senior Counsel upon 54 advocates of the High Court of Kenya,” he said.
He added that the honour symbolized more than career achievement, calling it a renewed obligation to serve the country with integrity. “This recognition is more than a personal milestone; it is a solemn call to deepen our service to the Republic and to uphold the finest traditions of our constitutional democracy. As we don the silk, may we carry this honour with unwavering integrity, patriotism, professionalism and humility,” Wetang’ula noted. He further urged his fellow honorees to continue defending democracy, strengthening institutions, championing reforms and improving access to justice.
Among the other notable figures conferred was former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi, who also attained the Senior Counsel rank during the ceremony. The designation is regarded as the apex of legal excellence in Kenya and is traditionally reserved for advocates with outstanding contributions to the profession.
