A life was lost on the spot, and three others were left fighting for their lives after a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 collided head-on with a trailer along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Makueni County on Friday. The crash, which occurred in Sultan Hamud, Mukaa Subcounty, underscores the continuing dangers on one of the country’s busiest roads.

Sultan Hamud Traffic Base Commander Patrick Mwando said the car had four occupants at the time of the accident. “One of the car’s occupants died instantly, while the remaining three sustained serious injuries. They were first rushed to Kilome Nursing Home in Emali before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialised medical treatment,” he said. The wreckage was towed to Sultan Hamud Police Station as investigations get underway.

The incident came just hours after another highway accident left a turn boy injured when a trailer he was travelling in veered off the Nairobi-Namanga Road interchange near Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River. The driver escaped unharmed, while the injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during the festive season, when high traffic volumes and reckless driving contribute to repeated tragedies. Despite government efforts deploying mobile traffic courts, accidents continue to claim lives and inflict serious injuries across major highways.

Police said the cause of the Sultan Hamud crash was yet to be established, reinforcing calls for vigilance and adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further fatalities during this high-risk period.
