Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has intensified his attacks on the country’s police leadership, accusing Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja of failing to contain – and in some cases enabling – rising violence at his political rallies.
In a strongly worded statement on Tuesday, Gachagua demanded Kanja’s immediate resignation, saying the police boss has lost control of the service and is presiding over what he termed coordinated attempts to intimidate the opposition.
“If you are not in full control of the Police Service, kindly do the honourable thing and resign,” Gachagua said, adding that recent disruptions at his rallies were too frequent and too similar to be coincidental.
He cited the violent clashes that erupted in Narok Town on Monday as the latest example of targeted interference. Despite tens of officers being deployed in the area, Gachagua alleged they were not there to maintain order, but rather to frustrate and suppress his campaign activities.
The former Deputy President said the pattern of stone-throwing incidents, confrontations, and goon-led chaos at his events points to a failure – or deliberate refusal – by the police boss to uphold fairness and security. He warned that unless urgent action is taken, these attacks could escalate and further erode public confidence in national security institutions.
