The Ministry of Interior and National Administration has declared Friday, March 20, 2026, a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr, one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar.
In a Gazette Notice issued under Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior confirmed that the day will be observed nationwide, allowing Muslims across the country to join millions around the world in celebrating the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
“It is notified for the general notice of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2(1) of the cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday , the 20th March of 2026 shall be a public holiday to mark the Idd-ul-Fitr“.
Idd-ul-Fitr, which translates to the βFestival of Breaking the Fast,β marks the conclusion of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and reflection observed by Muslims. The day is typically characterized by special prayers held in mosques and open grounds, charitable giving known as Zakat al-Fitr, and communal gatherings with family and friends.
In Kenya, the holiday is officially recognized due to the countryβs diverse religious composition and longstanding commitment to religious inclusivity. Coastal regions, as well as urban centres with significant Muslim populations, often witness large congregational prayers and vibrant celebrations.
The declaration of the public holiday ensures that Muslim faithful can fully participate in the religious and cultural significance of the day, while also promoting unity and respect among different communities across the nation.
