Governor George #Natembeya has narrowly escaped death by a whisker after being attacked while campaigning for Erick Wekesa in Chwele-Kabuchai Ward.
This kind of political hooliganism isn’t very decent. Violence has no place in our democracy, and those behind these criminal acts must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. Every candidate deserves the freedom to campaign safely, and every voter deserves peace.
Various news outlets showed shattered windows on his(Natembeya’s) cars, including a police escort, amid reports of shots that scattered the crowd. The incident has heightened political tensions in the area and underscored the increasingly volatile nature of the by-election.
Confirming the attack, Natembeya’s Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) directly blamed the confrontations on goons allegedly linked to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, whose Ford Kenya Party supports Vincent Maunda, a rival candidate.
These scenes took place at Wetangula’s backyard in Bungoma County as the political rivalry between the two gets to its worst point.
