JKUAT Disputes Didmus Barasa’s Academic Credentials

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) has disputed the authenticity of an academic certificate presented by Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, saying its records do not show that he studied at the institution or graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2008.

In a letter dated September 14, 2026, JKUAT Registrar of Academic Affairs Dr Aggrey Wanyama told the Consumers Federation of Kenya (COFEK) that Barasa’s name could not be found in the university’s student or alumni records.

The university also raised questions about the certificate itself, noting that JKUAT did not hold a graduation ceremony in May 2008.

Based on its records, the institution concluded that the certificate attributed to its Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme was not genuine.

“His name doesn’t appear on our alumni records, and JKUAT did not have a graduation in May 2008. His certificate for Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Programme is therefore ‘NOT GENUINE,’” Dr Wanyama said.

JKUAT further disclosed that concerns regarding Barasa’s academic qualifications had previously been brought to the attention of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK).

According to the registrar, the university had already shared information concerning the authenticity of the qualifications with the two institutions during earlier inquiries.

“This matter has previously been investigated by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), and the same information was communicated to both organisations,” Wanyama said.

JKUAT said it had communicated its findings to the EACC and EBK for their consideration and any further action they may deem necessary.

The latest communication adds a new development to questions surrounding the academic qualifications attributed to the Kimilili legislator, with the university’s position based on its official academic and graduation records.
