Kenya has begun a major facelift of one of its busiest transport corridors, with works officially underway to transform the highway linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Westlands into a modern, safer and visually appealing gateway into the capital.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) on Friday formally launched the 27-kilometre Mombasa Road–Westlands Highway renovation project, just days after President William Ruto announced plans to rehabilitate and beautify the route. The project was officially handed over to China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) following a site visit by KeNHA officials.
According to KeNHA, the works will cover the stretch from JKIA along Mombasa Road, through Uhuru Highway, and onwards to ABC Place on Waiyaki Way. The initiative is part of a broader plan to modernise infrastructure surrounding Kenya’s main international airport and enhance Nairobi’s image as a regional hub.
The site visit was led by KeNHA Director of Maintenance Engineer Ezekiel Fukwo, accompanied by technical teams from both the authority and the contractor. KeNHA noted that the multi-million shilling project goes beyond landscaping and aesthetics, incorporating critical infrastructure and road safety upgrades to improve user experience.
The authority added that the beautification will adopt environmentally sustainable designs to enhance visual appeal while minimising environmental impact. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve safety standards, traffic flow and the overall outlook of Nairobi’s key transport corridor.
