Rigathi Gachagua: “After the Gen Z protest, the Cabinet was dissolved, and William was struggling to decide what to do, including attempts to bring in Raila. We allowed him to proceed without much argument. When he announced the first batch of Cabinet appointments, none of the positions I had negotiated for from my counties were given to anyone from my home area. I asked him why, and he told me to wait a bit.

“When it came to the final appointments, he called Musalia Mudavadi and me and asked us to flank him as he announced the last batch of Cabinet nominees. He was in a hurry, saying, “Let’s go.”

“I asked him, “What do you mean, let’s go? How do we flank you to announce names we do not know?” He insisted, “Musalia, let’s go.” I refused. I told him, “If we are flanking you during the announcement, we must be aware of what you are announcing, as is the usual practice. I cannot flank you to announce a Cabinet list that I have not seen. I cannot hear the names for the first time together with the rest of Kenyans and the press.”

“He became very angry and rushed back to his office. As for Musalia, my God-he was shaking like a leaf, saying, “How can we challenge the President? How? Please, this is not right.”

“I told him, “Musalia, my friend, do you know your name could be missing from that list? The only person who is safe is me because I am elected”.
