Chaos erupted in Narok Town on Monday, November 24, as Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi #Gachagua faced police attempts to disrupt his campaign. However, the former Deputy President appeared prepared for the confrontation, donning a black helmet that quickly became the highlight of his campaign trail.
Reports indicated that police had mounted heavy roadblocks to prevent Gachagua from entering Narok Town. Undeterred, he made his way into the town, his helmet providing a striking symbol of preparedness and personal protection. Within minutes of beginning his speech, police fired teargas to disperse the crowds.
Despite the disruption, Gachagua pressed on, addressing residents who chanted anti-government slogans. A teargas canister was hurled toward his convoy, forcing a temporary retreat, but no injuries were reported. His choice of protective gear appeared to give both him and his supporters confidence amid the chaos.
Gachagua’s campaign visit aimed to support DCP candidate Douglas Masikonde in the Narok Town Ward race, one of the final pushes before the November 27 by-elections. In a statement following the incident, Gachagua criticized the police presence, alleging it was a deliberate attempt to frustrate his campaign.
“Clear instructions had been issued by this cowardly and brutal regime to block me and my entourage from accessing Narok Town to campaign for the DCP Candidate,” Gachagua said. “But the people, united, are stronger than roadblocks, bullets, stones, or teargas. No force can intimidate the people of the Republic of Kenya.”
The #Narok Town contest is shaping up to be a tight race between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), whose candidate is Robert Kanyinge Ole Kudate, and Gachagua’s DCP party. Other competitive regions, such as Mbeere North, are also witnessing heated campaigns ahead of the by-elections.
