Former Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has successfully registered his own political party ahead of the 2027 General Election.
On Tuesday, December 9, the former city governor unveiled the new political outfit dubbed the National Economic Development Party ( #NEDP ). He was accompanied by a large group of supporters who followed him across the city, pledging to stand with him should he decide to run for any position. The crowd chanted “Sonko… Sonko… Sonko” as he addressed them from the rooftop of his vehicle.
Mr. Sonko said the new party will offer an alternative platform focused on economic transformation, social empowerment, and inclusive growth. He noted that Kenyans are increasingly looking for leaders who can address the country’s rising economic challenges and improve their quality of life.
According to the politician, NEDP will prioritise youth employment, business support, and grassroots development—key areas he believes are essential to restoring the country’s economic stability. #Sonko also hinted at forging new political alliances as the country edges closer to the 2027 polls, signalling that NEDP will be an active player in upcoming political formations.
Sonko’s tenure as Nairobi Governor under the Jubilee Party was marked by controversy. Although he enjoyed popularity due to his Sonko Rescue Team initiative, his term was cut short when he was impeached amid corruption cases filed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), making it difficult for him to vie in 2022. His long legal battle came to a turning point this month when a Nairobi court cleared him of any wrongdoing.
Sonko succeeded Dr. Evans Kidero as Nairobi Governor. Kidero, who also faced years of prosecution before being cleared by the courts, is similarly reported to be eyeing a major political comeback in 2027.
