Fifteen people have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident along the Nyeri–Mweiga road near Dedan Kimathi University of Technology on Saturday evening, March 28, 2026.
The crash involved a 14-seater public service vehicle operated by Nyekicha Sacco and a lorry transporting firewood. Several passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Nyeri County Referral Hospital in critical condition.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the lorry driver reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting a cyclist before losing control and colliding head-on with the matatu, which was en route from Nyeri town to Mweiga.
The impact left the matatu extensively damaged, with sections of the vehicle crushed and debris scattered across the road. Emergency responders arrived promptly and worked to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage, as onlookers gathered at the scene.
