Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has announced his retirement from active politics, marking the end of a long and influential career in Kenya’s public life.
The veteran politician said he is stepping away from the political arena to focus on a new chapter centered on promoting happiness in workplaces and mentoring fellow leaders on life beyond public office.
Kiraitu, a former Cabinet minister and one of the country’s most articulate political thinkers, noted that public service is demanding and often leaves little room for personal reflection and emotional well-being. Having spent decades in politics, he said the time had come to redirect his energy toward helping individuals and institutions cultivate healthier, more fulfilling working environments.
According to him, productivity and national progress are closely linked to the mental and emotional well-being of people at work.
He also revealed plans to coach politicians, especially those nearing the end of their public careers, on how to transition smoothly into life outside elective office.
Kiraitu observed that many leaders struggle after leaving power, not because they lack ability, but because they are unprepared for life beyond politics. Through mentorship and dialogue, he hopes to help them rediscover purpose, dignity, and balance after public service.
Kiraitu’s announcement has drawn mixed reactions, with supporters praising his honesty and self-awareness, while others reflect on his legacy in shaping Kenya’s political discourse. Regardless of opinion, his decision underscores an often-overlooked reality: that leadership does not end with office. By choosing to focus on happiness, mentorship, and personal growth, Kiraitu Murungi is redefining retirement not as withdrawal, but as transformation. #Kiraitu
