Embattled Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has secured a temporary reprieve after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) halted attempts to remove him from office.
In orders issued on Thursday, the tribunal suspended any implementation of resolutions seeking to oust Sifuna, pending the hearing and determination of an application challenging the process. The decision effectively allows Sifuna to remain in office as the dispute is subjected to legal scrutiny.
The move follows internal party tensions and recommendations by sections of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to remove him from the influential position. Sifuna, who also serves as Nairobi Senator, had contested the legality of the process, arguing that due procedure under the party constitution and national laws was not followed.
The tribunal’s intervention now shifts the matter to a legal battleground, setting the stage for a substantive hearing that will determine whether the removal attempt was lawful.
The ruling is expected to cool immediate tensions within the Raila Odinga-led party, which has recently witnessed heightened internal contestation. Sifuna’s supporters have maintained that any attempt to remove him must strictly adhere to party structures and the Political Parties Act.
ODM officials are yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the tribunal’s orders.
The case now awaits further directions from the PPDT, whose final determination will have significant implications for the party’s leadership structure and internal cohesion.
