Anxiety has gripped Kenya’s aviation and travel sector after the Embassy of Russia in Kenya issued a cautionary notice to its citizens amid escalating military tensions in the Middle East.

In an alert released on the evening of Monday, March 2, the embassy warned Russian nationals of severe disruptions caused by the closure of airspace over key transit countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The advisory cited armed aggression involving the United States and #Israel against Iran, which has triggered widespread airspace restrictions across the Gulf region.

The notice urged Russian citizens unable to depart Kenya to take precautionary steps, including installing the “Assistant Abroad” mobile application, notifying the embassy of any travel challenges, and registering with the consulate in case of emergencies. Travellers were further advised to liaise with tour operators regarding cancellations and to contact airlines directly for rebooking, refunds, or compensation.

For those unable to secure alternative flights through the Gulf, the embassy recommended exploring new transit hubs such as Addis Ababa, Egypt, or Istanbul.

The ripple effects are already being felt at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where Middle Eastern carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways have experienced operational disruptions. Kenya has temporarily become a holding ground for stranded travellers facing cancelled or indefinitely suspended flights.

With major global airlines scaling back operations to affected regions, uncertainty now clouds international travel plans, raising concerns among business leaders, tourists, and foreign missions operating within Kenya. #Russia
