Celebrations erupted after Francis Atwoli was re-elected as Secretary-General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) for a sixth term, extending his long-standing leadership of the country’s largest workers’ umbrella body.

Delegates, union leaders, and supporters broke into song and dance moments after the announcement, turning the conference venue into a lively scene of jubilation.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as chants praising Atwoli echoed across the hall. Supporters waved union flags and traditional drums accompanied celebratory dances, reflecting the strong backing he enjoys from many affiliated unions. Several labour leaders described the re-election as a vote of confidence in Atwoli’s leadership and his decades-long role in championing workers’ rights in Kenya.

Speaking shortly after his victory, Atwoli thanked delegates for the renewed trust and pledged to continue advocating for fair wages, improved working conditions, and stronger protection for workers across different sectors of the economy.

He emphasized that the labour movement must remain united to tackle emerging challenges such as job insecurity, technological disruption, and changing labour markets.

Atwoli has led COTU for many years and is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in Kenya’s labour movement. His leadership has often placed him at the center of national debates on employment, labour laws, and economic policy.

As the celebrations continued, union members expressed optimism that the new term would strengthen the organization’s efforts to defend workers’ interests and expand opportunities for decent employment across the country. The lively songs and dances symbolized not just victory, but renewed solidarity within the labour movement.
