Tanzanian Bongo Flava artist Sefu Shabani Ramadhan, popularly known as Matonya, has been released from Shimo La Tewa Prison in Mombasa County after spending several weeks in custody over rape allegations linked to an incident reported in Nyali.

He secured his release after meeting the bond conditions set by the Shanzu Law Court. The terms include surrendering his travel documents and remaining within Kenya as he awaits the continuation of his trial.

#Matonya was first arrested on March 12, 2026, following a formal complaint filed with authorities in Mombasa. Police reports indicated that he was taken in for questioning before being formally charged, after which the court ordered that he be remanded pending a bond hearing.

He was later denied immediate release during his initial court appearance, with the prosecution arguing that he was a flight risk due to his international status. The court subsequently granted him bond under strict conditions, leading to his release from custody on April 28, 2026, as the case proceeds.
