The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new USSD service that allows taxpayers to access key services using any mobile phone, without the need for internet access or visits to KRA offices. The service, available by dialling *222#, is aimed at improving convenience and efficiency, particularly as the tax filing season approaches.
Through the USSD system, users can perform tasks such as PIN registration, PIN retrieval, Turnover Tax (TOT) filings, Monthly Rental Income (MRI) declarations, ETIMS transactions, payments, obtaining Tax Compliance Certificates, customs services, and other tax return functions. This is part of KRA’s effort to make tax compliance accessible to all, especially those without smartphones or reliable internet.
“Digital access has been a major challenge for many taxpayers. Not everyone has the tools or skills to use platforms like iTax or eTIMS. With this USSD service, we are simplifying access and ensuring that no Kenyan is left behind due to technology barriers,” the authority stated.
The system also allows taxpayers to recover old KRA PINs and verify their existing PINs, essential functions for smooth tax filing. By reducing the need to physically visit KRA offices, the authority expects to enhance compliance and reduce administrative bottlenecks.
This development comes shortly after KRA announced plans to validate income and expenses declared in tax returns. Starting with 2025 returns, figures submitted via iTax will be cross-checked against official data sources, including ETIMS invoices, Withholding Tax gross amounts, and customs import records.
The authority said the exercise aims to ensure accurate tax reporting and strengthen the integrity of Kenya’s tax system.
