Uganda’s long-serving leader Yoweri Museveni has been re-elected president for a seventh term, according to results announced by the Electoral Commission.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer was declared the winner on Saturday, January 17, after securing 71.65 per cent of the total votes cast, equivalent to 7,946,772 votes, in an election that has drawn widespread controversy.

Announcing the outcome, Electoral Commission Chairperson Simon Byabakama said the commission was declaring the results in line with Section 59 of the Presidential Elections Act.

Museveni s rival Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has since disputes the outcome describing it as cooked and fake.

He went live to order supporters to ignore and reject the announcement.
