Barcelona SC Stun Leaders as Palmeiras March into Copa do Brasil Semi-finals

Thursday delivered plenty of football drama, with two matches standing out for very different reasons. Independiente took the lead shortly before half-time when Carlos González converted a 40th-minute penalty. Barcelona responded immediately after the break, with Jefferson Wila heading in the equaliser in the 46th minute.

The game changed further when Independiente were reduced to 10 men following Mateo Carabajal’s second yellow card in the 59th minute. Barcelona pushed forward looking for the winner, but it appeared the visitors would survive.

Then came the decisive moment. Substitute Darío Benedetto, introduced in the 88th minute, scored deep into stoppage time at 90+10 to complete a remarkable comeback. The victory moved Barcelona to 42 points, although Independiente remained comfortably top of the table with 68 points.

Santos 0-0 Palmeiras

In Brazil, Palmeiras secured their place in the Copa do Brasil semi-finals after drawing 0-0 away to Santos.

Santos needed a major comeback after losing the first leg 3-0, but Palmeiras defended their advantage effectively. Santos created opportunities early on, including a good chance for Lucas Veríssimo, while Neymar also tested goalkeeper Carlos Miguel with a dangerous free-kick.

Palmeiras ultimately held firm and progressed to the semi-finals for the 10th time under Abel Ferreira. Santos’ elimination ends their Copa do Brasil campaign, while Palmeiras remain alive in three competitions this season.
