Chelsea began the 2026/27 Premier League campaign in dramatic fashion, securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory away to Fulham at Craven Cottage. The result gave new head coach Xabi Alonso a winning start in his first competitive match in charge of the Blues.
Chelsea made a sensational start, with João Pedro finding the net inside the opening minute after combining with Cole Palmer. The early goal immediately set the tone for an entertaining West London derby.
Fulham responded through Josh King after a costly mistake from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, exposing one of the weaknesses that could concern Alonso as the season progresses. Chelsea, however, regained control when new signing Morgan Rogers scored on his competitive debut, following an assist from centre-back Maxence Lacroix.
Palmer then put Chelsea 3-1 ahead with a composed finish after another impressive attacking move involving João Pedro. The England international produced one of his most influential performances, underlining his importance to Alonso’s plans.
Fulham refused to surrender and reduced the deficit when debutant Gonzalo García scored in the second half. Chelsea were forced to defend under sustained pressure during the closing stages, but the Blues held on for three valuable points.
The victory provided plenty of encouragement for Chelsea supporters, particularly the performances of Palmer, João Pedro and Rogers. However, Alonso will know there is considerable work to do defensively, with Sánchez’s performance and Chelsea’s vulnerability under pressure standing out.
For now, Chelsea can celebrate a winning start. The attacking quality is promising, but the Blues will need greater defensive stability if they are to challenge for a place among the Premier League’s top teams this season.
