Chief Cardiologist at The Karen Hospital Dr Daniel Gikonyo told the court on Wednesday that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua suffered Takotsubo syndrome, also known as “broken heart syndrome” triggered by extreme stress during his October 2024 impeachment proceedings, with symptoms that mimicked a heart attack.

While being cross-examined by state lawyers, the medic stood by his affidavit and confirmed that Gachagua experienced severe chest pains and underwent urgent cardiac scans, leading to hospital admission at Karen Hospital.

He also defended a disputed hospital system entry showing a 31-day stay, saying it was a record error and that Gachagua was actually discharged after three days.
