Morara Kebaso and Mercy Makini’s Separation Turns Public as Couple Trade Accusations

Political activist and Borabu parliamentary aspirant Morara Kebaso and his estranged wife, Mercy Makini, have publicly exchanged remarks over the breakdown of their marriage, bringing a previously private family matter into the spotlight.

The dispute emerged on Friday, September 4, 2026, after Kebaso addressed growing speculation about his family and reports concerning his relationship with another woman.

Kebaso said he had initially preferred not to discuss his family publicly but felt compelled to respond to what he described as misinformation circulating on social media. He acknowledged Mercy as the mother of their three children – Zainah Morara, Garang Morara and MK Junior – and asked the public to continue according her respect.

He also said every family has its own way of handling private matters and urged Kenyans not to impose their values or expectations on his family.

Mercy subsequently responded, saying she had walked away from the marriage about six months earlier and had deliberately kept the separation private.

She accused Kebaso of bringing the matter into the public domain after she had chosen to remain silent for the sake of those involved. Mercy also challenged his comments concerning their children, questioning his knowledge of their day-to-day welfare during the period they had been separated.

“Where do you get the moral authority to mention kids that you have no idea what they’ve been eating for the last 6 months?” she wrote, according to reports quoting her social-media response.

Kebaso later gave a more detailed account of his relationship with the children, rejecting the suggestion that he had been an absent or irresponsible father.

He claimed that he had attended parents’ meetings at Rophine School and had at times travelled long distances to be present for his children despite his political activities. He also said he had made attempts to reconcile with Mercy after she left the family home.

According to reports carrying his account, Kebaso said he travelled to Mercy’s parents in Bobasi seeking a family meeting, but instead was served with court papers.

Another issue raised in Kebaso’s response concerns the children’s schooling. Reports say he claimed two of the children were moved from Rophine School to an international school while he was away in China, resulting in substantially higher education costs. He reportedly questioned the decision and said he preferred his children to attend ordinary Kenyan schools.

The couple’s public fallout follows renewed online speculation about Kebaso’s personal life after a woman identified as Pauline appeared with him in a video and referred to him as her husband. However, available reports do not independently establish when that relationship began or whether it played any role in the separation from Mercy.

Mercy and Kebaso had previously been publicly known as a married couple, with #Morara openly praising his wife during his rise as a political activist. Mercy describes herself publicly as a mother, wife and business leader.

Kebaso is currently pursuing a political career and is a parliamentary aspirant for Borabu ahead of the 2027 General Election. He has been active in Jubilee Party political mobilisation in Kisii and Nyamira counties.

For now, the public dispute presents two competing accounts of the couple’s separation. Mercy says she privately walked away from the marriage about six months ago, while Kebaso has focused on his role as a father and his reported attempts at reconciliation.

With children and reportedly a court process involved, the full circumstances surrounding the separation remain a private matter between the two parties. Neither side’s social-media statements, on their own, establish the complete history of the marriage.
