Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has intensified his criticism of ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, arguing that the youthful politician should temper his national ambitions.
According to Mudavadi, Sifuna is not yet ready for the country’s top offices and should allow more seasoned leaders to complete their political journeys before seeking the presidency.
“We had leaders such as Michael Kijana Wamalwa and Masinde Muliro, who underwent years of mentorship before attaining national stature. We must be careful not to rush into politics without adequate preparation. For now, we should support President William Ruto as we await our turn for the top seat,” he said.
Mudavadi further noted that the Luhya community has previously held the deputy presidency and should now focus its energies on pursuing the presidency itself. In his view, any push for the deputy presidency – including the one associated with Sifuna – risks diverting attention from the community’s ultimate objective.
Critics, however, contend that such arguments reflect an outdated political mindset that underestimates younger leaders. They point out that modern campaigns can be driven by public goodwill and digital mobilization rather than vast financial resources or decades of waiting.
From this perspective, today’s aspiring leaders need not follow traditional timelines and should be free to seek higher office when they believe they have earned the confidence of voters.
