Orengo Calls for Tolerance as Linda Mwananchi Leadership Debate Intensifies

Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on members of the Linda Mwananchi movement to tolerate divergent political views and avoid taking issue with colleagues who hold different opinions as the opposition outfit prepares for the 2027 General Election.

Orengo’s remarks come amid growing debate over the movement’s leadership, following indications that several senior figures may have different preferences over who should lead the outfit into the next presidential contest.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Monday, Orengo acknowledged that some members were unhappy with his position on the question of who should lead Linda Mwananchi.

The Siaya governor said the issue had also emerged during a recent meeting in Naivasha, where members differed over whether the movement should begin discussing its preferred presidential candidate.

Orengo explained that he had attempted to discourage the leadership debate, arguing that the movement should first concentrate on building its political base and strengthening its organisation before settling on who would lead it.

He questioned whether attempting to silence people because of their political opinions was consistent with the democratic principles that Linda Mwananchi claims to champion.

The debate has gained fresh attention after Orengo openly expressed interest in the movement’s presidential candidacy, setting the stage for what could become a competitive process ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sifuna endorsement adds pressure

The leadership question became even more prominent during the Linda Mwananchi tour of Meru on Sunday, August 30.

Orengo was notably absent from the Meru tour, which was led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and attended by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and other leaders. Orengo, however, sent a message of solidarity to the team.

During the Meru rally, Babu Owino publicly endorsed Sifuna for the movement’s presidential ticket, while reports also indicated support for Sifuna from Natembeya and other leaders.

Citizen Digital reported that the endorsements came only about 48 hours after Orengo had declared his interest in the Linda Mwananchi presidential candidacy.

The development has consequently raised questions about whether the movement can maintain unity as different leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

Babu Owino, however, has also stressed the importance of opposition unity, warning that no single political group can successfully capture the presidency without bringing together other leaders and their supporters.

Orengo urges restraint

Despite the emerging differences, Orengo has maintained that political disagreements should not automatically translate into divisions within the movement.

His comments appear aimed at allowing different leaders to express their ambitions while keeping the wider Linda Mwananchi agenda intact.

The movement has in recent months been expanding its political mobilisation across different parts of the country, presenting itself as part of the wider opposition effort ahead of the 2027 elections. Its leaders have repeatedly highlighted the need for a common political agenda, constitutionalism and accountability.

The leadership contest, however, could test that unity as the election approaches.

For now, Orengo’s call is for tolerance and democratic debate, while the endorsements witnessed in Meru suggest that the question of who will eventually carry the Linda Mwananchi presidential banner could become one of the movement’s biggest political tests.

With the 2027 election still ahead, the competing ambitions are likely to continue shaping the movement’s direction as its leaders attempt to balance individual political ambitions with the broader goal of building a united opposition force.
