FKF Premier League Kick-Off Postponed as New Season Faces Fresh Uncertainty

Kenyan football fans will have to wait a little longer for the return of top-flight action after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) postponed the opening round of the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season.

The decision means there will be no FKF Premier League matches from Monday, August 31 to Wednesday, September 2, despite the fixtures having been scheduled for this week.

FKF said the postponement was necessary to allow further consultations involving the federation, participating clubs and league sponsors over the management of the new campaign.

The delay comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding the promotion and relegation structure and the composition of the new league season. A dispute involving Kariobangi Sharks and the promotion and relegation arrangements has also contributed to uncertainty over the start of the competition.

No KPL matches today

With the entire opening round postponed, football supporters will not have a Kenyan Premier League fixture to follow today.

The same applies to Tuesday and Wednesday, with all Round One matches scheduled between August 31 and September 2 having been called off.

FKF has not yet provided a new date for the postponed matches, leaving clubs and supporters waiting for further communication on when the 2026/27 campaign will officially begin.

Gor Mahia enter season as defending champions

When the new campaign eventually gets underway, Gor Mahia will begin as the reigning Kenyan champions.

Gor Mahia secured the 2025/26 FKF Premier League title after AFC Leopards’ defeat to APS Bomet left them with an unassailable lead. The triumph gave K’Ogalo a record-extending 22nd league title.

The 2025/26 season has therefore already concluded, meaning the standings from that campaign remain the most recent completed league table.

For the new 2026/27 season, however, there is no competitive league table yet because Round One has not been played.

Clubs now wait for a new date

The postponement gives clubs additional time to prepare, but it also leaves uncertainty over the league calendar.

Teams had spent the pre-season strengthening their squads and preparing for the opening fixtures. The latest delay means coaches, players and supporters must now wait for FKF to announce a revised schedule.

For Kenyan football followers, the big question is now simple: When will the new FKF Premier League season finally kick off?

Until FKF provides a new date, there will be no official league fixtures or new standings to report.

The postponement has turned what was expected to be the opening day of another exciting Kenyan football season into a day of waiting – with clubs, players and fans all looking towards FKF for the next announcement.
