Ruto Meets FIFA President Infantino as Kenya Steps Up Football Plans

President William Ruto has held talks with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in New York as Kenya seeks to strengthen its partnership with world football’s governing body and accelerate preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, brought together Ruto, Infantino and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, among other officials.

According to FKF, the discussions focused on Kenya’s preparations to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The officials also discussed plans to position Kenya as a hub for international football and sports tourism.

A proposed FIFA-standard stadium in Mombasa was among the key issues discussed. The facility is expected to serve the Coast region and provide a venue capable of hosting international football and other major sporting events.

Ruto also said discussions covered the establishment of regional technical centres aimed at identifying and nurturing young football talent across the country. The initiative is expected to strengthen grassroots development and create clearer pathways for promising players.

The meeting further touched on the FIFA Arena project, which includes the development of small football pitches for communities and schools, as well as plans for a modern technical centre.

Infantino described his engagement with Ruto as productive and reaffirmed FIFA’s support for football development in Kenya. The FIFA president also presented Ruto with the official match ball used in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

With AFCON 2027 approaching, the discussions highlight Kenya’s efforts to improve football infrastructure, develop young talent and strengthen the country’s capacity to host major international sporting events.
