The Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition has appointed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as its new party leader, marking a significant leadership reshuffle within the opposition outfit. The decision was reached during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In the changes announced after the meeting, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi was named the new secretary-general, taking over from Suna East MP Junet Mohammed. The coalition said the appointments were aimed at strengthening its leadership structure and enhancing internal coordination as it repositions itself ahead of future political engagements.
Kalonzo’s elevation to party leader is seen as a move to consolidate unity within Azimio and reinforce its role as the country’s leading opposition coalition. Coalition leaders described him as a seasoned statesman with extensive experience in national politics, diplomacy, and coalition-building.
At the same time, Caroli Omondi’s appointment as secretary-general signals a shift toward administrative renewal and strategic reorganization. Omondi is expected to play a central role in coordinating coalition affairs, overseeing party operations, and mobilising grassroots support.
Speaking after the meeting, Azimio leaders reaffirmed their commitment to democratic ideals, accountability, and inclusive leadership.
They noted that the changes reflect the coalition’s resolve to remain cohesive, responsive, and effective in articulating the concerns of Kenyans while offering robust oversight of the government.
