A Kenyan pastor based in the United States has announced his resignation from his leadership role at the U.S. branch of the Jesus Compassion Ministry (JCM), following the church’s decision to invite President William Ruto to its event in Kenya.
Pastor Charles Wachira made the announcement on Sunday morning, February 22, explaining that his departure is motivated by a commitment to spiritual leadership rooted in truth, righteousness, and the protection of innocent life.
In his statement, Wachira expressed serious concerns over recent leadership decisions and public engagements, which he said have unsettled many believers, particularly members of the younger Generation Z.
He emphasized that the church has a moral obligation to remain sensitive to the struggles of the community. Actions by leaders that lead to confusion, division, or ethical unease among followers, he argued, require a principled response.
“Spiritual leadership must be anchored in truth, righteousness, and the defense of innocent life,” Wachira said. “When leadership decisions create division, confusion, or moral tension among congregants, it becomes necessary to act in accordance with conscience and principle.”
The pastor also highlighted the increasing calls for justice, accountability, and moral clarity from young believers, especially in Kenya’s current delicate socio-political environment. He referenced biblical teachings that urge leaders to denounce evil and advocate for the oppressed, emphasizing that spiritual leaders must serve as a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Wachira clarified that his resignation is motivated by conviction rather than dissent and promised to provide further details regarding his decision.
His departure follows the church’s invitation to President William Ruto for its third-anniversary celebrations at the main JCM headquarters in Ruiru, Kiambu County. The announcement of Ruto’s attendance had sparked criticism on social media, with some church members threatening to boycott the service.
The Jesus Compassion Ministry, led by Bishop Ben Kiengei, operates 64 branches both locally and internationally, including locations in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, South Africa, and the United States, where Pastor Wachira oversaw activities.
