After nearly two weeks out of the public spotlight, veteran Oburu Oginga has reappeared and moved to silence speculation about his health and whereabouts.
In a video shared on Friday, May 8, the senior Orange Democratic Movement figure assured supporters that he is well, saying he is currently in Kisumu enjoying time with friends and playing golf.
Oburu, speaking in the clip, said he was in good health and thanked Kenyans who had expressed concern over his absence.
“Thank you for your concerns about my whereabouts. I am here in Kisumu, up and about, playing golf, and I want to wish all of you a very happy weekend,” Oburu said.
Earlier in Nairobi, ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale dismissed claims circulating on social media that Oburu had been flown abroad for treatment following alleged health complications.
Etale sought to calm public concern, insisting that Oburu remains healthy and is expected to make a public appearance on Saturday.
He also rejected suggestions that the veteran politician is incapacitated or unable to guide the party, saying he remains actively involved in preparations ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
“We have seen some local dailies questioning the whereabouts of our party leader. I have his permission to state that he is okay and fine,” Etale said.
“The reports that he is unwell or missing are not true. He is okay, and tomorrow you will see him at the alma mater of his late father speaking and engaging with the public,” he added.
Before Friday’s clarification, Oburu had missed several recent political events, including the ODM retreat in Mombasa, fueling speculation over his condition and location.
His re-emergence comes at a time of growing divisions within ODM. One faction aligned to Oburu supports cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance.
Another wing, the Linda Mwananchi faction led by James Orengo and former Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, has maintained that the party should reject backing President William Ruto for re-election and instead pursue an independent political course.
The party also remains split over the implementation of the 10-point Memorandum of Understanding signed between the late Raila Odinga and President Ruto, with some members accusing the government of failing to fully honour the agreement.
