The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed that the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo was the result of a road traffic accident, officially ruling out any foul play. The announcement comes after an in-depth investigation by multiple DCI units, which sought to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the politician’s tragic death along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 5, 2026, the DCI said investigators deployed homicide detectives, intelligence officers, and forensic specialists immediately after Jirongo died on the night of December 13, 2025, along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway at Karai. Authorities analysed CCTV footage, physical evidence from the crash scene, statements from witnesses and key individuals, as well as bus manifests and amateur videos captured at the time.
The agency confirmed that Jirongo’s Mercedes‑Benz collided head‑on with a Climax Coaches public service vehicle (PSV) in the early hours of the morning. CCTV recovered from a nearby petrol station reportedly shows Jirongo’s vehicle entering the station just moments before re‑joining the highway and the subsequent collision.
Statements have been recorded from Jirongo’s wife, the PSV driver and conductor, petrol station staff, numerous bus passengers, and senior political figures who had interacted with #Jirongo hours before the crash.
“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the #DCI said, urging the public to avoid speculation that could undermine the investigation.
The investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further direction, including potential charges against the PSV driver for offences such as dangerous driving.
