Lawyer and outspoken political activist Miguna Miguna has declared his intention to contest Kenya’s presidency in the 2027 General Election, unveiling what he described as a bold and transformative national agenda.

Speaking during a Tv inter on Tv47, Miguna said he is determined to offer Kenyans an alternative leadership path anchored on constitutionalism, accountability and radical governance reforms. “I am going to vie for the presidency of Kenya in 2027. I am going to do it on a transformative vision,” he said, adding that the country needs a decisive break from what he termed entrenched political deception and elite capture of state institutions.

Miguna, a former adviser to ODM leader Raila Odinga, has long positioned himself as a fierce critic of the political establishment, often clashing with successive governments over governance, human rights and the rule of law. His political journey, however, has not been without setbacks.

In 2017, Miguna vied for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat but suffered defeat at the hands of former governor Mike Sonko. The loss did little to dim his political ambition, as he remained active in national debates, frequently using legal platforms and media appearances to challenge state actions and political leadership.

He has also been at the center of several high-profile controversies, including his role in the 2018 mock swearing-in of Raila Odinga and his subsequent deportation and exile, episodes that cemented his reputation as a defiant political figure.

With the 2027 race still two years away, Miguna’s declaration adds an early voice to the growing list of aspirants eyeing the presidency. It remains to be seen whether his renewed bid will translate into broad political support or reshape the national conversation ahead of the polls.
