The nomination of Ida Betty Odinga, wife of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has stirred reactions within the family.
Raila Odinga Jr., the couple’s son, called for an urgent family meeting following the announcement, expressing surprise and concern over his mother’s appointment.
“I’m not a politician. I love everyone and respect everyone. My uncle has agreed to a family meeting on the 1st; I would like it sooner. I don’t know what is happening. Do not involve me in the politics,” he said, highlighting the personal and political sensitivities surrounding the nomination.
The nomination, announced on Friday by the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, recognizes Ida Odinga’s decades-long advocacy for women’s education and empowerment. President William Ruto described her work as “a testament to the highest ideals of selfless leadership,” citing her courage and sustained commitment to public service.
