A grim discovery in #Kericho has taken a far more disturbing turn after investigators uncovered dozens of bodies at a suspected mass burial site, far exceeding the figures initially reported. What was first believed to be a limited number of graves has now revealed a significantly larger and more troubling scene, raising urgent questions about how the situation escalated unnoticed.
Fresh details from the ongoing exhumation indicate that 33 #bodies have so far been recovered from the site. Among them are both adults and children, with a majority of the remains believed to belong to minors. Early assessments suggest that many of the victims were teenagers and young children, deepening public concern over the nature of the burials.
Further breakdown of the findings shows that 25 of the bodies were underage, while eight were identified as adults. Authorities are yet to release a comprehensive statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the burials, leaving the public anxiously awaiting clarity.
The exhumation exercise, which began on March 23, 2026, is being led by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. The process is under the supervision of Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto, alongside a government pathologist representing Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor.
As bodies are retrieved, forensic experts are conducting examinations on-site to establish possible causes of death. The scale of the operation has shocked residents in the area, many of whom have expressed alarm and confusion over how such a large number of bodies ended up at the cemetery.
The National Police Service had earlier confirmed the launch of investigations on March 22, following the initial discovery of suspected mass graves. Preliminary information suggested that the bodies may have been transferred from Nyamira District Referral Hospital after remaining unclaimed at the facility’s morgue.
While early findings have not conclusively pointed to criminal intent, two individuals – a public health officer attached to the hospital and the cemetery caretaker – have been detained for 30 days to assist with investigations. Authorities say inquiries are ongoing as they work to piece together the full circumstances behind the disturbing discovery.
