Friday Football Results: Bayern Thrash Union as Chelsea and Espanyol Suffer Defeats

Friday’s European football produced a mixture of expected results and major surprises, with Bayern Munich delivering a huge victory while Chelsea, Monaco and Espanyol produced very different outcomes from several pre-match predictions.

Bayern Munich 7-0 Union Berlin

Bayern Munich turned their Bundesliga meeting with Union Berlin into a one-sided affair, cruising to a 7–0 victory at the Allianz Arena.

Michael Olise was the star of the night, scoring a hat-trick, while Harry Kane contributed two goals. Jamal Musiala and Ismael Saibari were also on the scoresheet.

Our pre-match prediction was Bayern to win, with a possible clean-sheet victory also highlighted. Bayern went well beyond that expectation, scoring seven without reply.

Kane’s brace also took him to 101 Bundesliga goals in just 98 appearances, according to reports.

Brentford 3-0 Chelsea

Chelsea suffered one of the biggest surprises of the evening, losing 3-0 away to Brentford. The match was goalless at half-time, but Brentford took control after the break.

Brentford opened the scoring in the 61st minute before adding two further goals late in the game. The hosts’ attacking performance was reflected in their 2.22 expected goals compared with Chelsea’s 0.68, according to the Guardian’s match report.

Our pre-match discussion had identified Chelsea or Draw (X2) and Over 2.5 goals as possible approaches. The three goals landed, but the result went against the X2 selection.

Monaco 1-0 Lens

Monaco secured a 1-0 victory over Lens, making the result one of the predictions that went according to plan. The Monaco win had been our principal selection before kick-off.

The result also extended Monaco’s unbeaten start to the Ligue 1 campaign. Monaco’s official website confirms the final score at Stade Louis-II.

The predicted 2–1 scoreline did not materialise, however, as Monaco’s defence kept Lens out.

Espanyol 1–3 Elche

The biggest disappointment for our selections came from Spain, where Espanyol lost 3-1 at home to Elche.

Elche took a commanding lead through two first-half goals from Fer Niño. Espanyol pulled one back after the break through an own goal, but Germán Valera restored Elche’s two-goal advantage late in the match.

Our selection for this fixture had been Espanyol Draw No Bet, meaning the bet required Espanyol to win while a draw would have resulted in the stake being returned. With Elche winning 3–1, the selection did not land.

The four matches provided a reminder that football predictions remain uncertain even when pre-match statistics point strongly in one direction. Bayern and Monaco delivered the expected result, while Chelsea and Espanyol produced results that went against our selections.
