A fresh political storm has erupted in Murang’a County after Governor Irungu #Kang’ata announced his plans to abandon the ruling United Democratic Alliance and seek 2027 re-election through another party ticket or as an independent candidate.
This move has triggered a sharp response from National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, who accused Kang’ata of political opportunism and threatened to reveal private details about his past dealings with President William #Ruto.
In a strongly worded statement, Ichung’wah questioned Kang’ata’s sudden change of loyalty, saying the governor had aggressively lobbied to be considered for the Deputy President position during the period surrounding the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
“My friend, Governor Kang’ata of Murang’a – what is this I am hearing? Do you remember our meeting in Lavington during the impeachment period? Do you remember the kind of pressure you applied to be named Deputy President?” Ichung’wah said.
The remarks have intensified speculation over widening cracks within the Kenya Kwanza coalition as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Kang’ata, who has recently taken independent positions on several national matters, has not publicly confirmed his exit from #UDA, but political observers say the signals point to growing tension between some Mt Kenya leaders and the ruling party.
If he formally quits UDA, Kang’ata would become one of the highest-profile governors to break ranks with President Ruto’s party, potentially reshaping political alignments in the Mt Kenya region.
