Moses Kuria Predicts Possible Ruto-Gachagua Alliance Ahead of 2027

Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has raised the possibility of President William Ruto and his former deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, finding their way back into the same political camp ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kuria made the remarks during an interview with Citizen TV on Sunday, August 9, suggesting that despite the bitter political differences that ended their working relationship, the two leaders could still reach an agreement.

According to #Kuria, Kenya’s political scene is unpredictable, and alliances that currently appear impossible could emerge as the country moves closer to the next election.

He challenged Gachagua to make a public declaration that he has no existing political agreement with Ruto and will not enter into one before the 2027 polls.

“I’ve asked him yesterday to go to the moderator of the PCEA church. Take the Bible and say to the world, one, that he doesn’t have a deal currently with William Ruto. And two, that he’s not going to have one before 2027,” Kuria said.

Kuria also pointed to a planned trip to the United States in September, claiming that Gachagua was preparing to travel there at a time when Ruto is also expected to be in the country.

The former CS appeared to suggest that the two politicians could use the opportunity to reopen communication and possibly negotiate a political arrangement.

“Rigathi is preparing for an overseas trip in September in the US. Ruto will be there in September. I don’t know what I’m saying, but watch this space,” he added.

The comments come as politicians continue to position themselves and build alliances ahead of the 2027 election, with opposition leaders pushing for a united front against the Ruto administration.

Gachagua, who now heads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he could reunite politically with Ruto. He has instead been working alongside other opposition figures who are exploring ways of presenting a common candidate in 2027.

Ruto and Gachagua were elected President and Deputy President respectively under the Kenya Kwanza coalition in 2022. Their partnership, however, deteriorated significantly during their time in office, with Gachagua eventually facing accusations of undermining the President and acting outside his constitutional mandate.

Parliament subsequently initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy President. The National Assembly approved the motion before the Senate also voted to remove Gachagua from office.

Gachagua later challenged his removal in court. The High Court subsequently upheld the impeachment, finding that the process had met the required legal threshold. He has since appealed the decision, with the matter expected to proceed.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Gachagua has remained politically active and has continued engaging with opposition leaders as they seek to consolidate their numbers ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

Kuria’s latest prediction therefore adds another layer of intrigue to an already fluid political landscape, where former rivals could potentially become allies as the election approaches.
