Ndindi Nyoro Officially Joins the Opposition Ahead of 2027 Duel

Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) Ndindi Nyoro has announced his departure from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), declaring that he has joined the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro made the announcement during a media briefing at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi on Monday, August 17, 2026, where he also pledged to work with opposition leaders in an effort to unseat President William Ruto in the upcoming elections.

“I want to be very direct. I, Ndindi Nyoro, from today, I have joined a party called People’s Party of Kenya,” Nyoro declared.

The Kiharu lawmaker said his decision followed nearly a year of consultations with various opposition figures as he considered his political future and the direction he believed would best serve Kenyans.

Nyoro revealed that he had held discussions with several prominent opposition leaders, including Peter Munya, Martha Karua, James Orengo, Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

“You know Sifuna is my brother,” #Nyoro added, referring to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, as he detailed his engagements with leaders across the political divide.

The announcement came after Nyoro delivered a wide-ranging speech outlining reforms he said he intends to pursue should the Kenya Kwanza administration leave office after the 2027 elections.

Explaining his decision to leave UDA, Nyoro said he had been carrying a heavy political burden and had spent considerable time reflecting on the direction he should take.

“I have been carrying a heavy burden. I have been thinking and praying that in whatever direction I take, politically speaking, the people of Kenya must be the great consideration that I have,” he said.

As part of his new political strategy, Nyoro said members of parties affiliated with the opposition would be welcome at PPK rallies, signalling his intention to build a broader political alliance ahead of the elections.

He also announced plans to begin a countrywide tour, starting with regions traditionally considered President Ruto’s political strongholds, including Uasin Gishu, Kericho and Nandi.

According to Nyoro, the tours will provide an opportunity to explain to voters the issues that led to his fallout with the Kenya Kwanza administration, which he strongly supported during the 2022 General Election.

Beyond the national political contest, Nyoro pledged to support candidates seeking parliamentary and MCA positions under the People’s Party of Kenya. He said he would offer guidance as the party works to establish a stronger grassroots presence across the country.

“People contesting for MCAs and MPs under the People’s Party, I will be offering them advice so that as we fight above there, we also have credible leaders in the wards and constituencies,” Nyoro stated.

Nyoro’s move marks a significant shift in his political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections and could reshape alliances within Kenya’s political landscape, particularly in the Mt Kenya region and other areas where he plans to campaign.
