The Odinga family has been thrown into mourning following the death of Job Odima Atinga, a veteran intelligence officer and cousin of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. His passing has drawn condolences from leaders and residents of Siaya County, where family members gathered to pay their last respects.
The news of Atinga’s death was announced by Raila’s sister, Ruth Odinga, who said the family had assembled at Alego Kakan in Siaya County to mourn the loss of their relative.
In a condolence message shared on Friday, July 31, Ruth remembered Atinga as a committed public servant whose career was defined by professionalism, integrity and unwavering dedication to the country.
“This evening, I came to Alego Kakan to sit with the family of my late cousin, Mr Job Odima Atinga, as we mourn his untimely passing,” Ruth said.
According to Ruth, Atinga served Kenya with distinction as a senior officer in the National Intelligence Service (NIS) before his final assignment at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nyanza Regional Office.
She said his decades of service reflected an unwavering commitment to protecting the country’s peace and security, earning him admiration from colleagues for his courage, professionalism and humble approach to duty.
“Job served this country with distinction as a senior officer in the NIS, and his final posting at the DCI Nyanza Regional Office demonstrated a life dedicated to the peace and security of our nation,” she said.
“His was a career built on integrity, courage and quiet, selfless service to Kenya,” Ruth added.
She also extended her sympathies to Atinga’s widow, Syprose Odupe Atinga, and their children, assuring them that the wider Odinga family would stand by them during the difficult period of mourning.
“To my sister-in-law, Syprose Odupe Atinga, and to Job’s children, our family grieves with you. We will continue to walk with you through this difficult season,” she said.
Atinga’s death comes as the Odinga family continues to cope with a series of tragic losses over the past year.
