Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has acknowledged the growing influence of the Linda Mwananchi movement, describing it as a serious political force that should not be underestimated.
Speaking during TV47’s Swahili programme, #Sonko said the movement poses a significant challenge to the current regime, adding that leaders such as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino cannot simply be dismissed.
According to Sonko, anyone downplaying the rise of the new political outfit is either ignoring reality or is jealous of the momentum it has gained across the country.
When asked whether he would consider working with the movement, Sonko responded affirmatively, revealing that he has already been in contact with some of its key figures, including Babu Owino.
“I would work with anyone any day. In fact, today I have just spoken to Babu Owino. I have also talked to Kalonzo Musyoka. I can work with all of them. This is politics,” Sonko said.
The businessman further observed that Senator Edwin Sifuna’s popularity continues to grow, attributing part of that success to the choice of the name Linda Mwananchi, which he said resonates strongly with ordinary Kenyans.
Although Sonko noted that it is still too early to predict whether the movement will win future elections, he praised its leaders for the impact they have made in a short period.
He also urged veteran politicians to respect the emerging generation of leaders, arguing that attacking younger politicians would not stop the changing political landscape.
“This is the time for young people to shine,” Sonko remarked.
