Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director, Captain William K. Ruto, and his family were involved in a serious road #accident on Friday, April 3, in Taita Taveta County. The crash tragically claimed the life of his daughter, while Captain Ruto remains hospitalised under medical supervision.

In a statement on Saturday, KPA confirmed the accident and announced the death of Captain Ruto’s daughter. “We are deeply saddened to announce that our Chief Executive Officer, Capt. William K. Ruto, was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while travelling with his family,” the authority said.

The statement added: “Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt. Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief.”

Captain Ruto, who has led KPA since 2023, is reportedly in stable condition and under close medical supervision. “We remain hopeful for their full and swift recovery,” the statement said.

KPA also indicated that they are cooperating with investigative authorities, including the police, to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The incident comes amid a deadly Friday night on Kenyan roads, as many travellers headed upcountry for the Easter holidays. Separately, a crash on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Kariandusi near Gilgil has claimed 11 lives after a 14-seater matatu collided with a stalled trailer early Saturday. Gilgil Sub-County Police Commander Winston Mwakio said the trailer had mechanical issues when the speeding matatu lost control and crashed.

Additionally, the Kenya Red Cross Society reported another major accident at around 5:20 a.m. at the Tunnel area in Fort Tenan, Kericho County, involving two buses and two lorries carrying 66 passengers. Twenty people were injured, including six children, with five sustaining serious injuries. Two of the critically injured were referred to higher-level facilities, while the rest receive care at Fort Tenan Sub-County Hospital.
